Cyber Specialist Arrested for Selling Classified Information to Undercover FBI Agent
In a shocking turn of events, cyber specialist Jareh Sebastian Dalke, a former Information Systems Security Designer for the NSA, was arrested for attempting to sell highly classified national defense information to what he believed was a Russian contact. The 32-year-old Colorado Springs resident initiated contact with an undercover FBI agent and solicited $85,000 in exchange for sensitive documents.
On August 26, 2022, Dalke sent excerpts from the documents via an encrypted email service to the undercover agent, meeting the agreed terms by rendezvousing with the purported Russian operative at Union Station in downtown Denver. He handed over four documents marked Top Secret NDI before being apprehended by authorities.
Court documents revealed that Dalke, a former U.S. Army serviceman, provided a cryptocurrency address for payment and deposited a comparable amount to a crypto exchange under his real identity. His actions were easily traceable, as the NSA maintains detailed records of all documents printed within its facilities.
In September 2023, Dalke was directed by an undercover agent to transmit five documents over a secure connection at a train station in Denver. Despite taking precautions such as leaving his phone at home and disabling location services in his vehicle, he was swiftly apprehended by the FBI after completing the transfer.
The case highlights the importance of cybersecurity measures and the severe consequences of attempting to sell classified information. Dalke now faces serious charges for his actions, which could have had far-reaching implications for national security.
