The Urgent Need for International Regulation of Artificial Intelligence: Establishing an International Data-Based Systems Agency (IDA)

The global debate over the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) has reached a critical juncture, with many scientists and tech leaders warning of the potentially catastrophic consequences of unchecked AI. Elon Musk and the late Stephen Hawking have both issued dire warnings about the dangers of AI, prompting calls for international guardrails to ensure that this emerging technology serves the common good.

In response to these concerns, there is a growing consensus among experts that governments should introduce regulations to promote data-based systems that protect human rights globally. The establishment of an International Data-Based Systems Agency (IDA) has been proposed as a global AI watchdog that would ensure the safe and ethical use of AI technologies.

Support for the creation of an IDA has come from a diverse group of influential figures, including Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and even Pope Francis. The United Nations has also highlighted the importance of protecting human rights in data-based systems, with recent resolutions calling for effective measures to prevent adverse human rights impacts of AI technologies.

With the international community recognizing the need to protect human rights in AI systems, the next step is clear: the UN must establish an IDA to oversee the development and use of AI technologies. As the debate over AI regulation continues to evolve, the need for a global regulatory framework to ensure the safe and ethical use of AI has never been more urgent.
