New Technology to Prevent Taxi Overcharging: Industry Leaders Welcome Change
New Technology to Crack Down on Taxi Drivers Overcharging Passengers
In a move welcomed by industry leaders, a new technology is set to make it increasingly difficult for taxi drivers to overcharge passengers. Cabcharge, the country’s largest taxi payment provider, is rolling out new technology that will link cab drivers’ payment terminals with their meters. This new system will prevent dishonest drivers from inputting exorbitant fees on the payment terminal that do not match the distance and accrued fee on the meter.
The crackdown on dishonest practices comes as penalties for overcharging passengers have recently increased in states like NSW and Queensland. In NSW, taxi drivers now face a penalty of up to $1,000, while in Queensland they could be fined up to $3,096 or issued a penalty infringement of $309.
Industry leaders, including operators like 13cabs, Silver Service, and Black & White Cabs, have welcomed the introduction of this new technology. Taxis using the technology will display a sticker that reads, ‘We proudly accept Cabcharge’.
Nick Abrahim, CEO of the NSW Taxi Council, praised the new technology as a step towards strengthening customer trust with taxi drivers and the industry as a whole. He emphasized that while the majority of drivers do the right thing, this technology will help stamp out the few dishonest drivers who tarnish the industry’s reputation.
The rollout of this new technology aims to minimize the number of drivers behaving dishonestly at the expense of passengers. It sends a strong message to those who try to flout the law and overcharge passengers. This move is part of a broader crackdown on dodgy taxi practices and aims to ensure a fair and transparent system for passengers.
