Fast-Food Chain in US Replaces Drive-Through Workers with AI: Warning for Australia

The fast-food industry is undergoing a major transformation in the United States as artificial intelligence takes over traditional drive-through roles, sparking concerns about the future of jobs in Australia.

Wendy’s, a popular hamburger chain, made headlines in April when it replaced its drive-thru workers with AI-powered ordering screens. This move is part of a growing trend among major fast-food chains in America, including McDonald’s, Chipotle, Domino’s, and Taco Bell, to embrace AI technology.

A viral video on TikTok captured the eerie encounter between a customer and the AI ordering screen at Wendy’s. In the video, the customer is seen interacting with the robotic voice prompts to place an order for a Chocolate Frosty, with the machine efficiently completing the transaction in less than 30 seconds.

The video, which has garnered close to one million likes, has sparked a debate among social media users about the implications of AI takeover in the workforce. While some see the technology as a convenient innovation, others express concerns about the potential job losses that could result from automation.

Wendy’s defended its decision to implement AI technology, stating that it aims to streamline the ordering process and allow employees to focus on providing quality food and service to customers. However, experts like Associate Professor Niusha Shafiabady from Charles Darwin University warn that the widespread adoption of AI in fast-food restaurants could lead to mass worker displacement.

According to Griffith University Senior Lecturer David Tuffley, Australia is likely to follow in the footsteps of the US and introduce AI technology in the fast-food industry within the next few years. As the technology continues to evolve rapidly, it is only a matter of time before AI becomes a common sight in Australian restaurants.

The rise of AI in the fast-food industry serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding automation and its impact on the workforce. While the benefits of AI technology are undeniable, the potential consequences for workers in industries like fast food are a cause for concern.
