Meta Forms Product Advisory Council with Four White Male Tech Execs: Concerns Over AI Oversight Rise
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the formation of a new product advisory council, named the Meta Advisory Group, consisting of four white male tech executives. This move comes six months after the disbanding of Meta’s Responsible AI division, raising concerns over artificial intelligence oversight.
The council, which includes payment platform Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, and former Microsoft executive Charlie Songhurst, will provide periodic consultation to Meta’s management team on new technologies and products. Despite not being paid, the members will operate independently from the board of directors.
This announcement follows Meta’s commitment to significant investments in AI, despite the time it may take for these investments to pay off. As other tech giants continue to pour billions into AI, concerns over governance, data privacy, ethics, and safety risks have been raised, with calls for more robust oversight mechanisms.
The formation of the Meta Advisory Group is reminiscent of the now-defunct Responsible AI division, which was tasked with regulating the safety of the company’s AI ventures. The decision to disband the division in November, along with previous layoffs, has drawn attention to the lack of diversity in the new council’s composition.
With all four members being white males with similar tech executive backgrounds, critics have highlighted the lack of representation in terms of gender, race, and professional history. While Meta has four women on its 11-member board, questions remain about the all-male composition of the new advisory group.
Meta has not responded to requests for comment on the matter, including inquiries about the lack of diversity in the council. As the tech industry grapples with the challenges of AI governance, the formation of the Meta Advisory Group raises important questions about representation and oversight in the development of new technologies.
