NATO Members Call for Sending Ukraine Weapons to Win War Against Russia
NATO Urged to Provide Ukraine with Weapons to Win War Against Russia
As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, NATO members are calling for the West to provide Ukraine with the weapons it needs to achieve a strategic victory over Moscow. The defense ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, three Baltic states that border Russia, emphasized the importance of increasing political and military support for Ukraine to ensure that Russia is unable to pose a threat in the future.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur highlighted the need for NATO to act with urgency in providing Ukraine with long-range munitions, fighter jets, and other advanced weaponry. While NATO has given Ukraine billions of dollars in security assistance since the start of the conflict, there is a reluctance to provide Kyiv with the more powerful tools it needs to effectively combat Russian forces.
The Baltic states, fearing that they could be the next targets if Russia were to expand its aggression, have been vocal advocates for increased defense spending among NATO member states. They argue that supporting Ukraine is crucial for building up European security and preventing future conflicts with Russia.
Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasčiūnas emphasized that Ukraine is asking for ammunition and weapons, not Western troops, to push back against Russian forces. The goal, according to Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, should be the strategic defeat of Russia in Ukraine, ensuring that Ukraine regains lost territory and Moscow is unable to wage future conflicts.
NATO countries have pledged to continue supporting Ukraine with critical security assistance, with US President Joe Biden announcing additional air-defense systems for Kyiv. However, the Baltic states stress the need for a more comprehensive approach to enable Ukraine to achieve a decisive victory over Russia.
As Russia regains military strength and its war-time economy strengthens, the Baltic states warn that enabling Ukraine to win will require significant political support and commitment from the West. The question remains: will NATO help Ukraine win the war, or continue to support it “as long as it takes”? According to Pevkur, the answer must be a resounding commitment to helping Ukraine achieve victory over Russian aggression.
