New York City to Deploy Weapons Detection Technology in Subway System, Mayor Eric Adams Announces
New York City to Deploy New Weapons Detection Technology in Subway System
Mayor Eric Adams has announced that New York City will be implementing new weapons detection technology in the subway system in the coming days. The city has been exploring ways to utilize technology with the MTA’s existing camera systems to specifically detect guns.
This pilot program, first introduced in March, marks the initial phase of this initiative. The city will be installing freestanding screeners to identify guns and evaluate how this system will impact the flow of regular commuters. The specific stations where these screeners will be deployed have not yet been disclosed.
The city has opted to use Evolv Technology’s weapons detection system, the same technology currently in place at Citi Field. Mayor Adams expressed his confidence in this technology, citing the extensive testing that was conducted to ensure its effectiveness.
In a separate announcement, Mayor Adams and MTA officials revealed that subway crime in the city has been on a downward trend. Newly released data from the NYPD indicates that subway crime has decreased by nearly 8% in 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Mayor Adams attributes this reduction to the increased presence of law enforcement underground, focusing on quality-of-life issues and violence prevention.
This new weapons detection technology is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and security in the subway system. Stay tuned for updates on the implementation of this innovative technology to ensure the well-being of all commuters in New York City.
