Utilising Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development: PM Sonexay Siphandone’s Call to Action

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone of Laos has called for bold action to harness the power of digital technology and innovation in order to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speaking at the 80th Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of leveraging digital innovation for sustainable development in the region.

According to a United Nations report, the current progress towards fulfilling the SDGs is only 15 percent on track. In light of this, PM Sonexay stressed the crucial role that digital technology and innovation can play in advancing the SDGs by 2030.

The Prime Minister highlighted Laos’ commitment to digital transformation, citing the country’s adoption of strategic plans such as the 20-Year National Digital Economic Development Vision, the 10-Year National Digital Economy Strategy, and the 5-Year National Digital Economic Development Plan. These plans aim to drive socio-economic growth, promote sustainable development, and ensure cyber safety and security.

PM Sonexay also called on advanced countries to support developing nations in maximizing the benefits of digitalization. He emphasized the need for international cooperation, foreign investment, and technology transfer to bolster Laos’ socio-economic development.

In addition, Laos is preparing its 3rd Voluntary National Review to be presented at the 2024 High-Level Political Forum, with technical assistance from the UN country team and UN-ESCAP. The country also assumes the Chair of ASEAN this year under the theme “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience” and has designated 2024 as Visit Laos Year.

Overall, Prime Minister Sonexay’s address underscores the importance of digital innovation in driving sustainable development and calls for global collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of the SDGs.
