Analysis of China’s Growing Power in Emerging Technologies and its Impact on Global Geopolitics

The fierce competition between China and the United States for control of emerging technologies such as AI and 5G is shaping the international balance of power, according to a new study. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Exeter and the University of Minho, highlights the significance of developments in quantum computing, the Internet of Things, and Big Data in transforming global alliances and dynamics.

The analysis reveals that forming new allies has become crucial for the U.S. to address the challenges posed by China, especially in sensitive areas like national security and military applications. China’s increasing use of emerging technologies in both civilian and military sectors has elevated its status as a threat and a near-peer competitor to the U.S.

The study, published in the Chinese Political Science Review, examines strategic decisions made between 2017 and 2023, including bans and export controls targeting Chinese companies. It also explores the changing alignment posture of Western states in response to China’s technological advancements.

Dr. Maria Papageorgiou, one of the researchers involved in the study, emphasizes the importance of China’s growing power in driving global shifts in technology and geopolitics. While traditional alliances may not be as prevalent as during the Cold War, balancing dynamics are already at play.

Western states have taken various measures to counter China’s influence, including diplomatic efforts, export controls, and alliances aimed at excluding or targeting China. The study also highlights concerns over Chinese manufacturers’ geographic expansion and the potential national security risks posed by cross-border mergers and acquisitions.

The U.S. has accused Chinese companies of intellectual property theft and has implemented export controls to restrict China’s access to critical technologies. Initiatives like the US–Japan–ROK cooperation demonstrate active support among allies in technology and supply-chain security.

Overall, the study underscores the complex interplay between emerging technologies, geopolitical rivalries, and alliance formations in shaping the future international landscape. The competition between China and the U.S. for technological dominance is likely to have far-reaching implications for global power dynamics.
