CBDT Awards Taxnet 2.0 Project to Bharti-Airtel: A Facelift for Tax Department’s Network System

Bharti-Airtel to Revamp Income Tax Department’s Network System with Taxnet 2.0 Project

In a significant development, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has awarded the Taxnet 2.0 project to Bharti-Airtel, a leading telecom company in India. This project is set to bring a major facelift to the tax department’s network system, enhancing its digital infrastructure.

Under the leadership of Sunil Mittal, Bharti-Airtel will be responsible for providing a range of services to the Income Tax (I-T) department, including network connectivity, facility management services, and video conferencing services. The selection of Airtel for this project was made through an open tender selection process, highlighting the company’s expertise in the field of telecommunication.

The Taxnet 2.0 project aims to improve the users’ experience on the income tax department portal by enhancing security, revamping the network system, improving reliability, ensuring seamless connectivity, and enhancing tax services for citizens and businesses. With the implementation of Taxnet 2.0, the income tax department will have a robust network connectivity platform to serve taxpayers across India.

However, it is important to note that some taxpayers have recently faced challenges while filing their income tax returns, with discrepancies between Form 26AS and AIS data being reported. Chartered Accountants have highlighted issues with accessing taxpayer information summaries and slow speed on the income tax e-filing portal during peak filing periods.

Additionally, taxpayers who have opted for the new tax regime have faced problems with claiming rebates under Section 87A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. These technical glitches have impacted the filing process for many taxpayers, underscoring the need for a more efficient and user-friendly tax system.

The awarding of the Taxnet 2.0 project to Bharti-Airtel signals a step towards modernizing the income tax department’s network system and improving the overall tax filing experience for taxpayers. As the project progresses, taxpayers can expect a more secure, reliable, and seamless platform for filing their income tax returns.
