Tech Industry Layoffs Surge in 2023: A Look at the Numbers and Trends

Tech layoffs continue to plague the industry as TikTok, Pixar, and other major companies announce staff cuts. The trend of layoffs in the tech sector has been on the rise since late 2022, with a total of 84,600 workers losing their jobs in 2024 alone, according to layoffs.fyi.

On May 21, employees at TikTok leaked information to The Information about impending layoffs in the global operations and marketing division. This news comes on the heels of Pixar, a subsidiary of Disney, announcing a 14% staff reduction as the company shifts its focus away from Disney+ original shows back to feature films.

The tech industry has been hit hard by layoffs, with a total of 262,682 workers losing their jobs in 2023 compared to 164,969 in 2022. Companies like Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft saw the most significant number of layoffs in 2023.

Despite the high number of job cuts in the tech sector, the overall employment environment remains strong, with the unemployment rate hovering between 3.4% and 3.9% since December 2021. Worker confidence, as reflected in quit rates, is also at some of the highest levels in more than 20 years, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

The trend of layoffs in tech started in late 2020, with startups initially bearing the brunt of the job cuts. However, larger tech companies like Meta and Twitter have also started laying off employees in recent years, presenting a unique opportunity to attract top talent.

As the tech industry continues to navigate the challenges of layoffs and restructuring, the impact on workers and the broader economy remains a topic of concern. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story.
