Innovative Technology Strategies in Convenience Stores: Insights from Industry Leaders
The Conexxus conference in Arlington, Texas brought together industry leaders from top convenience store chains to discuss the importance of maintaining effective technology in the retail space. Ryan Uphouse, lead business analyst with Sheetz, emphasized the need to focus on technology that has matured and proven value, rather than constantly chasing new trends.
Uphouse was joined by Christine Loukota, director of emerging technologies at Alimentation Couche-Tard/Circle K, and Abhi Patel, director of information technology at Nouria Energy. The panel discussion, moderated by Ed Collupy of Conexxus, highlighted the different approaches to technology adoption at each chain.
Loukota shared Circle K’s success story of developing an integration layer that allows for the piloting and launching of new solutions without disrupting existing technologies. This approach has enabled the chain to test new ideas quickly and efficiently, leading to the creation of a unified system that is consistent and adaptable.
Sheetz, a top-ranking convenience store chain, has also embraced technology with 60 connected devices in each store and 500 integrated systems. The company has established an architecture team and leverages automation and robotics to enhance the consumer experience while supporting store employees.
Nouria Energy, a key player in the industry, is focused on recruiting and retaining top tech talent. Patel emphasized the importance of partnering with the right recruiting firm and implementing standardized processes for onboarding new talent.
Overall, the discussion at the Conexxus conference highlighted the importance of strategic technology adoption in the convenience store industry. By focusing on proven solutions and investing in talent, retailers can stay ahead of the curve and provide a seamless experience for customers.
