USAID Focuses on Opportunities and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Global Development

The U.S. global development agency, USAID, is taking a proactive approach to the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence. In a recent announcement, Administrator Samantha Power emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to strengthen democracy while remaining vigilant about potential misuse.

Power highlighted the risks associated with technologies like AI and spyware, which could be used by authoritarian regimes to suppress dissent and manipulate citizens. She stressed the need for national strategies and standards to counter digital repression and ensure transparency in the use of technology.

Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman also spoke about the potential of AI at the Global AI Leadership Summit, pointing to its ability to identify patterns and inform responses. However, she cautioned about the existing disparities in digital capabilities between the Global North and South, emphasizing the importance of human oversight and workforce development.

USAID is actively exploring the use of AI in global development, as evidenced by its AI use case inventory and action plan. Administrator Power recently met with Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, to discuss applications of AI in areas such as global health and reducing administrative burdens for implementing partners.

Overall, USAID is committed to shaping a responsible global AI agenda and strengthening digital ecosystems to maximize the benefits of technology while mitigating potential risks. The agency’s engagement with industry leaders and focus on collaboration underscores its dedication to leveraging AI for positive impact in international development.
